Calculation method (step by step)
- Decide the on-road price of the car and the down payment you can pay upfront.
- Subtract down payment from on-road price to get the loan amount.
- Convert the annual interest rate into a monthly rate.
- Convert the chosen tenure in years into months.
- Apply the EMI formula using loan amount, monthly rate and tenure in months.
- Compute total repayment (EMI x months) and total interest (total repayment minus loan amount).
Real-life example
Priya buys a car with an on-road price of Rs 10,00,000, pays Rs 2,00,000 as down payment, and finances the remaining Rs 8,00,000 at 9.5% per annum for 5 years (60 months).
Monthly rate r = 9.5 / 12 / 100 = 0.007917. Applying the EMI formula gives an EMI of approximately Rs 16,806.
